La La Land (2016)
Directed by Damien Chazelle, “La La Land” was one of the most successful and popular films of 2016. Grossing over $446 million worldwide, it received a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony, going on to win 6. It won a record-breaking 7 Golden Globes that same year.
Whiplash (2014)
Also directed by Damien Chazelle, “Whiplash” received rave reviews when it was released, particularly for J.K Simmons’ supporting performance. The story revolves around a young Jazz drummer trying to become the next big thing.
Ray (2004)
Featuring one of the most acclaimed leading performances of all time, “Ray” charts the career of rhythm and blues musician, Ray Charles. Played exceptionally by Jamie Foxx, the film was very successful, drawing positive reviews from critics for its musical numbers. Unfortunately, Ray Charles passed away in June 2004, just a few months before the film’s release later that year.
